But first, let’s take a quick look at the Nigerian Navy.

The Nigerian Navy

Basically, the Nigerian Navy is a branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces and it is one of the largest navies on the African continent with thousands of personnel.

The Nigerian Navy can be traced to the Nigerian Marine which was formed in 1914 after the amalgamation of the then Northern and Southern Nigeria. At that time, it was a quasi-military organization that expanded to become the Southern Nigerian Marine in 1893. The equivalent in Northern Nigeria was formed in 1900. Eventually, the two Marines were merged in 1914.

The responsibilities of the Marine included administration of the ports and harbors, dredging of channels, buoyage, and lighting operation of ferry services, touring launches, and other small craft that plied the various creeks and other inland waterways.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) was formed from the Nigerian Marine. The NPA which was charged with the running of ports and ensuring safe navigation.

Also, the Inland Waterways Department was another agency formed from the Marine.

The agency was involved in the running of ferries and touring launches. And the third organization was the Nigerian Naval Force which was made up mostly of reserve Royal Navy officers and ex-Service personnel who had been transferred to the Nigerian Ports Authority from the defunct Nigerian Marine.

Its primary responsibility was to train the personnel and set up the appropriate infrastructure necessary for the planned Navy.

The first basic training establishment for the future Navy – the HMNS QUORRA – was started on 1 November 1957 with 60 junior ratings, who underwent a 6-month basic seamanship course.

In July 1959, the Nigerian Naval Force became the Nigerian Navy when Queen Elizabeth granted permission for the Force to use the title ‘Royal Nigerian Navy’. The title was changed to the ‘Nigerian Navy’ in 1963 after Nigeria became a republic.

The constitutional task of the Navy was expanded in 1964 after the repeal of the 1958 Ordinance. The new law, known as the Navy Act of 1964, for the first time tasked the Navy with the “naval defence of Nigeria.” Other tasks assigned the Navy by the 1964 Act were essentially coasted guard duties, namely:

Assisting in the enforcement of Customs laws, making hydrographic surveys, and training officers and men in naval duties.

These tasks were essentially routine functions of any Navy. Consequently, the naval leadership began to mount pressure on the political leadership to re-define the constitutional role of the Navy.

In 1993, this pressure yielded the desired result and under a new law, Armed Forces Decree 105 (now known as the Armed Forces Act), was incorporated as part of the 1999 Constitution.

The Navy was given expanded military and constabulary roles, especially in the oil and gas sectors of the Nigerian maritime economy.

Now that’s you know about the history of the Nigerian Navy, let’s take a look at the recruitment process.

Nigerian Navy Recruitment Requirements

Joining the Nigerian Navy through the DSSC is a stringent process and you have to meet specific requirements. We have highlighted these requirements below:

  • You must be a Nigerian by birth.
  • You must be between 18 and 30 years.
  • You must be medically fit and present certificates of medical fitness from Government recognized Hospitals.
  • You must be of good character and must not have been convicted of any criminal offenses.
  • You must possess the requisite qualification and certificates.
  • You must not be members of any Secret Society, Cults or Drug Addicts etc.
  • Your chest measurement must not be less than 0.87 for men and your height must not be less than 1.65m if you’re a male and 1.60 if you’re a female.
  • Computer skill is an added advantage.

The form can only be obtained and filled online. All recruitment in the Nigerian Navy is conducted via the Nigerian Navy recruitment portal on www.joinnigeriannavy.com.

We have also highlighted the educational requirements below:

  1. The General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level;
  2. The Ordinary National Diploma (OND);
  3. The West African School Certificate or The Senior Secondary School Certificate;
  4. The London City and Guilds or The WAEC City and Guild.

Also, you must provide their primary school leaving certificate. If you have a higher educational or professional qualification, for example, HND, BA or BSc, etc., you should not apply at all.

On no circumstance should you declare false educational or professional certificates as this will lead to a direct removal or discharge and the offender is passed to the Civil Police for prosecution?

Also, any qualification or certificate not tendered or declared and accepted during the recruitment exercise is not admissible after the recruitment. And it cannot be rendered for the purpose of branch change or promotion during the Naval service.

Additionally, if you have any of the following challenges, you cannot apply:

  • previous orthopedic operation;
  • short sight;
  • ear problem;
  • flat foot;
  • fracture;
  • stammering;
  • less than the required height (1.70 for male and 1.67 for female)
  • any natural disability.

All candidates and applicants should be between the ages of 18 – 22 years old, at the time of entry into the Training School to receive the certificate. Whereas the age of 24 years, is acceptable for those who have higher qualifications, for example, ICT Professionals, Nurses, NCE Holders, etc.

Also, it is expected that you’re not married or have children before joining the Nigerian Navy.

When applying, you should print out the Parent or the Guardian Consent Form and the Local Government Attestation Form.

Here is a summary of the application process

  2. b) Create an account on the recruitment portal a valid email address (which will be your User Name) and password. It is important you memorize your username and password to login again in the portal.
  3. c) Download and print a copy of your completed Application form.

You will be invited for a written aptitude test and if you’re successful, you will be shortlisted for an interview which will involve the screening of academic certificates and credentials, medical and physical fitness tests, written and oral examinations.

You’re expected to come with the following items to the interview:

  1. Original and photocopies of academic certificates and credentials including:
  2. National Identity Card (acknowledgment slip admissible).
  3. First School Leaving Certificate and Senior Secondary School Certificates (WAEC, NECO etc), with scratch cards for verification of results (original copy of West African Examination Council Certificate is compulsory).
  • Certificates from tertiary institutions.
  1. Federal Ministry of Education authentication of foreign certificates.
  2. NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate.
  3. Birth Certificate/Declaration of Age.
  • Certificate of Local Government of origin.
  • Two (2) recent colored passport-sized photographs.
  1. Writing materials.
  2. Three pairs of white (unmarked) vests and navy blue shorts.
  3. A pair of white canvas shoes/trainers.
  4. Two bed sheets and pillowcases.
  5. A set of cutlery.
  6. Toiletries.

Failure to report on the interview date leads to disqualification.

But first, let’s take a quick look at the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF)

The NPF was established in 1820 as the principal law enforcement agency in the country with a staff strength of about 371,800.

The first person to have the highest rank in the police force was the Commissioner General, Colonel KK.

In 1879 a 1,200-member armed paramilitary Hausa Constabulary was formed and in 1896 the Lagos Police was established. Another similar force, the Niger Coast Constabulary had been formed in Calabar two years earlier in 1894 under the newly proclaimed Niger Coast Protectorate.

In the North, the Royal Niger Company set up the Royal Niger Company Constabulary in 1888 and when the protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria were announced in the early 1900s, part of the Royal Niger Company Constabulary became the Northern Nigeria Police, and part of the Niger Coast Constabulary became the Southern Nigeria Police.

During the colonial times, most police were associated with local governments (native authorities) but after Nigeria became an independent nation, these forces were first regionalized and then nationalized.

At that time, the NPF performed conventional police functions and was responsible for internal security. Also, the force was involved in supporting the prison, immigration, and customs services; and for performing military duties within or outside Nigeria as directed.

In the mid-1980, there were plans to expand the force to 200,000 and by 1983, the strength of the NPF was almost 152,000. It was also reported that there were more than 1,300 police stations nationwide.

The 1999 constitution designated the Nigerian Police (NP) as the national police of Nigeria with exclusive jurisdiction throughout the country.

There was also constitutional provision for the establishment of separate NPF branches “forming part of the armed forces of the Federation or for their protection of harbors, waterways, railways, and airfields.

One of such branches was the Port Security Police which was reported to have between 1,500 and 12,000 in 1990.

The force is a very large organization with a presence in 36 State commands grouped into 12 zones and 7 administrative organs.

The NPF maintains a three-tier administrative structure of departments, zonal and state commands.

As of 2018/2019, there are plans to increase the force to 650,000, adding 280,000 new recruits to the existing 370,000.

The authorities are planning to absorb 6,000 Nigerians in the 36 State Police Command Headquarters and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and according to a statement on its website, the force invites applications from suitably qualified Nigerians for enlistment into the NPF.

Nigeria Police Recruitment Requirements

It is nationwide recruitment of police constables and we have highlighted the general requirements below:

The most important requirement is your desire or passion for a career in the NPF. In addition, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Be a Nigerian citizen by birth and possess National Identity Number (NIN).
  • Age: Must not be less than 18 years of age or more than 25 years of age.
  • Education: Must have an O’ Level Certificate at least Five (5) Credits level passes including Mathematics and English Language in not more than two sittings in WASSCE/GCE/N ECO/NABTEB.
  • Character: Must be of good character and must not have been convicted of any criminal offense.
  • Height: Must not be less than 1.67 meters in height for men and 1.64 meters for women.
  • Chest Measurement: Must not have less than 86cm (34 inches) expanded chest measurement (for men only).

Physical Features:

Must not have any one of the following abnormalities or deformities:

  • Speech Impediment, Knock Knees, Bow Legs, Bent Knees, Flat Feet, Deformed Hands which cannot perform the full functions of the hand, Tattoos, Bodily Scar, Defective Eyesight or Squint Eyes, Amputation of any part of the body, Gross Malformation of teeth, Protruding Navel.
  • Pregnancy: Must not be pregnant at the time of Recruitment.

Financial Status: Must be free from any pecuniary embarrassment.

Guarantors’ Form: Must download and fill the Guarantors’ Form, presenting verifiable references from any two (2) of the following: Traditional Rulers, Magistrate, Local Government Chairman, Heads of Educational Institutions attended, Career Civil Servant not below the rank of Grade Level 12, Police Officer not below the rank of CSP, or Military Officer not below the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Possession of a valid National Drivers’ License is an added advantage.

If you have a university degree (B.sc), you’re also qualified for recruitment into the force. Also, you can use a polytechnic degree like OND or HND certificate to apply to the NPF.

It is important you have your O-level certificate before you can fill and submit the NPF application form online.

The requirements for your application are summarized below:

  • Age requirements start from 18 to 30 years depending on the position you’re applying for.
  • Each applicant must have Nigerian citizenship.
  • Each candidate should own a valid ID card (driving license, voter card, international passport).
  • Applicants for the position of Constable are expected to have credits in English and Math.
  • Candidates for Cadet Inspectors must have Advanced Level, Ordinary National Diploma, National Certificate in Education.
  • For other positions, applicants should own a University degree or a Higher National Diploma.
